The brief
The owners loved their street and their neighbours but had run out of room. A growing family meant the original layout — a tight galley kitchen with no real living space — had to change. They wanted the addition to feel like part of the original house, not a bolt-on.
Approach
We extended to the rear over a single storey, taking the kitchen and living off the back of the home and out into the garden. The roofline was matched to the existing pitch so the addition reads as original from the street. Internally, the bulkhead and ceiling heights step down to mark the threshold between old and new without losing flow.
Materials and details
- New kitchen with stone island bench and shaker-front joinery
- Covered timber deck with hardwood decking and exposed rafters
- Large sliding doors connecting living to the deck
- Refinished hardwood floors blending the original house with the new wing
Outcome
The footprint barely changed but the way the family uses the home is completely different. Kitchen, living and outdoor space now work as one — and the addition passes for original from the street.
